Description
Thermon SafeTrace® SLS Steam Tracer
Controlled Steam Tracing for Safe, Efficient Process Heating
The Thermon SafeTrace® SLS (Standard Low-output System) is an engineered steam tracing system designed to deliver controlled, predictable heat output for process temperature maintenance and freeze protection. Unlike conventional bare metallic steam tracers that often create excessive pipe temperatures and hot spots, SafeTrace SLS uses a composite insulation system to reduce thermal conductance while maintaining reliable heat transfer to the process pipe.
SafeTrace SLS is ideal for applications requiring low to moderate process temperatures, improved personnel safety, lower steam consumption, and reduced operating costs.
Product Overview
SafeTrace SLS consists of a copper or stainless steel tracer tube wrapped with engineered composite materials and protected by a safety yellow polymer jacket. This construction limits heat transfer to a controlled level, providing consistent heating along the entire pipe while avoiding localized overheating.
The safety yellow outer jacket also serves as a visual identification of steam tracing systems in accordance with ASME/ANSI A13.1, making maintenance safer and easier.
Key Features
- Controlled, predictable heat output
- Reduced risk of pipe hot spots and overheating
- Up to 35% lower steam consumption compared with conventional bare steam tracers
- Personnel-safe yellow identification jacket
- Complies with ASTM C1055 for touch temperature under specified operating conditions
- Available with copper or 316 stainless steel tubing
- Long continuous coil lengths
- Fewer steam traps and tube fittings
- Easy tape-on installation
- Compatible with Thermon ThermoTube® accessories and steam tracing components.
Construction
SafeTrace SLS features a multi-layer engineered construction:
- Copper or 316 Stainless Steel tracer tube
- Thermal retardant layer
- Heat reflective tape
- Safety yellow polymer jacket
This design lowers thermal conductance compared with bare steam tracers, providing a lower but highly predictable heat output while maintaining excellent system reliability.

Benefits
Improved Personnel Safety
The composite jacket helps maintain a touch temperature below 58°C under specified operating conditions, reducing the risk of accidental burns and supporting compliance with ASTM C1055.
Lower Steam Consumption
By reducing unnecessary heat transfer, SafeTrace SLS can lower steam consumption by up to 35% compared with bare metallic steam tracers, helping reduce operating costs.
Predictable Heat Distribution
The engineered insulation minimizes hot spots and prevents excessive pipe temperatures, extending equipment life and improving process stability.
Reduced Installation Cost
Long continuous coils allow the tracer to run directly from the steam supply manifold to the condensate return manifold, reducing the number of fittings, steam traps, and potential leak points.
Low Maintenance
Fewer mechanical connections translate into lower maintenance requirements and improved long-term reliability.
Typical Applications
SafeTrace SLS is commonly used in:
- Freeze protection systems
- Water and utility piping
- Fuel oil lines
- Chemical process piping
- Instrument impulse lines
- Tank farm piping
- Petrochemical plants
- Oil refineries
- LNG terminals
- Pharmaceutical and food processing facilities
- General industrial process piping.
Installation
SafeTrace SLS is supplied in long continuous coils and is normally attached directly to the process pipe using Thermon FT-1H Fixing Tape. Steam supply and condensate return connections are typically made using ThermoTube® pre-insulated tubing, creating a reliable and easy-to-install steam tracing system.
SafeTrace SLS vs. Bare Steam Tracing
| Feature | SafeTrace SLS | Bare Steam Tracer |
|---|---|---|
| Heat Output | Controlled and predictable | High and often uneven |
| Steam Consumption | Up to 35% lower | Higher |
| Pipe Hot Spots | Greatly reduced | Common |
| Personnel Safety | Jacket temperature typically <58°C | High burn risk |
| Installation | Continuous coils, fewer fittings | More fittings required |
| Maintenance | Lower | Higher |
| Operating Cost | Lower | Higher |
