Description
Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating Solutions
Reliable Electric Heating for Tanks, Vessels, Hoppers and Chutes
In many industrial processes, maintaining the correct temperature of materials is essential for reliable production. Process fluids, chemicals, powders and bulk materials can become too viscous, solidify, freeze or lose their required flow characteristics when exposed to low temperatures.
Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating solutions are designed to provide controlled and reliable heat for industrial tanks, vessels, hoppers and chutes. These heating systems help maintain process temperatures, prevent freezing and improve material flow in demanding industrial environments.
Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating product category
Tank and Vessel Heating
Industrial tanks and vessels often require continuous temperature maintenance to prevent product solidification or excessive viscosity.
Thermon provides several heating technologies for tank and vessel applications, including flexible electric heating panels and heat-transfer systems.
Typical applications include:
- Chemical storage tanks
- Oil and lubricant tanks
- Process vessels
- Bitumen and asphalt tanks
- Resin and polymer tanks
- Food and pharmaceutical process vessels
- Storage tanks requiring temperature maintenance
- Tanks containing high-viscosity liquids
The heating system can be selected according to the required operating temperature, tank construction, insulation, process material and heat-loss requirements.
Hopper and Chute Heating
Hoppers and chutes are frequently used to handle powders, solids and bulk materials. In cold or demanding operating conditions, material can bridge, freeze or stick to the equipment surface.
Thermon’s HT Hopper Heating Module is specifically designed for these applications. It is a rugged, self-contained heater intended for surfaces exposed to vibration and mechanical stress. The system can provide heat output of up to 4,650 W/m² (3 W/in²), depending on the application.
The HT module uses a parallel-circuit high-temperature alloy heating element. This configuration provides multiple electrical current paths and reduces the risk of total heater failure associated with conventional series-wire heating designs.
Key Features of HT Hopper Heating
- Rugged construction for industrial environments
- Designed for high-vibration applications
- Even heat distribution across the heating panel
- High-temperature alloy heating element
- Parallel electrical circuit design
- Maximum watt density up to 4,650 W/m²
- Temperature maintenance up to approximately 427°C (800°F)
- Maximum exposure temperature up to approximately 538°C (1,000°F)
- Available supply voltages from 120 to 600 VAC
Why Parallel-Circuit Heating Is Important
One of the important design characteristics of the Thermon HT heating module is its parallel-circuit heating element.
Unlike a conventional series heating wire, the parallel configuration provides multiple paths for electrical current. If a localized portion of the heating element is affected, the entire heating system is less susceptible to the complete circuit failure associated with a single series resistance path.
For hopper and chute applications exposed to continuous vibration, mechanical shock and thermal cycling, this construction provides an important reliability advantage. Thermon states that its modular hopper heater design was developed specifically to address vibration-related failure modes encountered with conventional heating technologies.
Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating Product Range
The Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating category currently includes several heating technologies:
1. HeetSheet-X®
HeetSheet-X is designed for tank and vessel heating applications where efficient heat transfer and controlled temperature maintenance are required.
It provides a solution for applications where a heating surface needs to be closely coupled to the tank or vessel.
2. HT Hopper Heating Module
The HT Hopper Heating Module is designed specifically for hoppers and chutes exposed to vibration and demanding industrial conditions.
Its rugged construction and high-temperature heating element make it suitable for applications where conventional heating cables may not provide sufficient mechanical durability.
3. RT FlexiPanel®
RT FlexiPanel heating units are flexible electric heating panels designed for tank and vessel heating. Thermon’s product information lists RT FlexiPanel units in 500 W, 1,000 W and 2,000 W configurations, with 120 or 240 VAC supply options and temperature maintenance capability up to approximately 121°C (250°F).
4. RTF FlexiPanel®
RTF FlexiPanel provides a compact flexible heating solution for tanks and vessels. Thermon’s product guide lists 300 W and 500 W configurations for this product family.
5. TFK Heat Transfer Compound System
The TFK system is designed to secure steam tracing tubing or hard-pipe to pipelines and tanks while improving thermal contact between the tracer and the heated surface.
TFK channels are available in galvanized or stainless-steel construction and are secured using stainless-steel banding straps.

Advantages of Thermon Tank & Hopper Heating
A properly engineered heating system can provide several operational benefits:
Temperature Maintenance
Maintains the required process temperature and helps prevent excessive cooling.
Freeze Protection
Protects liquids and process materials from freezing during cold conditions.
Improved Material Flow
Heating hoppers and chutes can help prevent material bridging, sticking and accumulation.
Energy Efficiency
Heating can be concentrated directly on the required surface, while insulation helps minimize heat loss.
Reliable Operation
Thermon heating systems are designed for demanding industrial environments and can be engineered according to the application’s thermal requirements.
Flexible Installation
Different heating technologies can be selected depending on the tank geometry, operating temperature, available power and process requirements.
Engineering and System Design
Tank and hopper heating should not be selected based solely on heater wattage.
A complete thermal design should consider:
- Tank or hopper dimensions
- Material of construction
- Process material
- Operating temperature
- Minimum ambient temperature
- Required heat-up time
- Thermal insulation thickness
- Surface heat loss
- Available voltage
- Hazardous-area classification
- Required temperature control
- Installation environment
- Vibration and mechanical conditions
Thermon’s HT hopper systems, for example, are engineered according to the heating requirements of the particular application rather than simply applying a standard heater configuration.
