Crane Fluid Systems Check Valves are designed to allow fluid to flow in one direction while automatically preventing reverse flow. Unlike manually operated isolation valves, check valves operate automatically according to the pressure and velocity of the fluid within the pipeline. This makes them an essential component for protecting pumps, equipment, pipework and water systems from unwanted backflow.

Crane Fluid Systems offers a broad range of check valves covering bronze, cast iron, ductile iron and cast steel constructions, with pressure ratings ranging from PN16 to PN32, as well as ANSI Class 125, Class 150 and Class 300options. The current Crane range includes 13 check-valve products across lift, swing and other check-valve configurations.


What Is a Check Valve?

A check valve, also known as a non-return valve (NRV), is an automatic valve designed to permit flow in one direction and close when the flow attempts to reverse.

The closing action is generated by the hydraulic conditions within the pipeline rather than by an external actuator. This makes check valves particularly useful for:

Lift Check Valves

Crane’s D104 and D116 are bronze lift check valves.

Lift check valves use a disc or piston that moves vertically to permit flow and closes against its seat when flow reverses.

The D104 is rated PN20 and available from 1/4″ to 2″, while the D116 is rated PN32 and available from 1/4″ to 3″. Crane specifies that lift check valves should only be installed in horizontal pipe runs.

Crane notes that horizontal lift check valves are primarily used for air, gas and steam services, while swing check valves are generally more suitable for water and other liquids.


Swing Check Valves

Swing check valves use a disc that swings away from the seat when flow moves in the correct direction. When flow reverses, the disc returns toward the seat to stop reverse flow.

Crane offers swing check valves in several configurations, including bronze, cast iron, ductile iron and cast steel.

The Crane D142, for example, is a PN32 bronze swing check valve available from 1/4″ to 3″.


Resilient-Seated Swing Check Valves

The D140 is a bronze swing check valve featuring a resilient disc.

It is available from 1/2″ to 3″ with a PN25 pressure rating and tapered threaded connections to BS EN 10226-2 (ISO 7-1).

Resilient seating can be particularly useful where improved shut-off performance is required.


Cast Iron Check Valves

For larger water and HVAC systems, Crane offers cast iron check valves including the FM469 and FM492.

The FM469 is a PN16 cast iron swing check valve available from 50 mm to 300 mm, with flanged connections to BS EN 1092-2 PN16. It features a bronze trim and resilient seat.

The FM492 is also a PN16 cast iron swing check valve, available from 50 mm to 300 mm, with flanged BS EN 1092-2 connections and a bronze seat. Its cast iron body has a fusion-bonded epoxy coating suitable for a C3 environment.


Ductile Iron Check Valves

For larger-diameter water and building-services systems, Crane provides the FM463 / FM466 / FA463 family.

This range covers DN50 to DN600 and includes PN16, PN25 and ANSI 125 configurations depending on the specific valve.

Crane also offers the FM463W, a PN16 check valve available from DN50 to DN300. It is WRAS approved and can be connected to BS EN 1092-2 PN16/PN25 as well as selected US flange standards.


Cast Steel Check Valves

For higher-pressure industrial applications, Crane offers the:

Check Valve Installation

Correct installation is important for reliable check-valve performance.

Crane notes that most of its swing check valves can be installed in:

  • Horizontal pipework
  • Vertical pipework with upward flow

However, lift check valves should only be installed in horizontal pipework.

The direction-of-flow arrow on the valve should always correspond with the intended direction of fluid flow.
